COMPARE & Win with IBM - x3650 vs Dell PowerEdge 2950III & R805

IBM System x3650 VS Dell PE 2950III

Summary

  • Dell proudly proclaims the PowerEdge 2950 III is the overall TPC-C price/performance leader with $.68/tpmC. IBM would actually beat Dell on this benchmark if it performed the TPC-C test on an identically configured x3650.
  • The System x3650 supports the new ServeRAID-VAULT adapter that encrypts data on the hard drive. Even if the drive is stolen or disposed of improperly, the data remains secure. The encryption is hardware-based and does not cause performance degradation like software-based encryption.
  • The x3650 has twelve DIMM slots and supports up to 48 GB of memory, compared to eight DIMM slots and a maximum of 64 GB of memory for the PowerEdge 2950 III. When the 8 GB DIMMs are available, the x3650 will support 96 GB of memory.
  • IBM includes the rack rails with each x3650, whereas on the 2950 III, they are an option ($249).
  • IBM provides Enhanced Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) on power supplies, processors, memory, hard drives, voltage regulator modules, and fans. The PowerEdge 2950 III only has PFA on its hard drives and memory.
IBM System x3650 VS Dell R805
Summary
  • The x3650 offers a number of highly flexible storage options. The PowerEdge R805 has severely limited storage options by comparison.
  • IBM includes the rack rails with each x3650, whereas on the R805, they are an option ($149-249).
